Understanding Electricity Costs
Electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kWh equals 1,000 watts used for one hour. The average US residential rate is about $0.16/kWh, but rates vary significantly by region. Understanding your appliance wattage and usage patterns helps identify the biggest energy consumers in your home.
LED vs Traditional Lighting
LED bulbs use 75-80% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 25 times longer. A 10W LED produces the same light as a 60W incandescent. The upfront cost is higher, but LEDs pay for themselves within months through energy savings. CFL bulbs fall between incandescent and LED in both efficiency and lifespan.
